Next time you’re parked at a truck stop, look at the doors of the trucks around you.
On some of them you’ll see it. A faint outline where an old decal used to be. A DOT number that doesn’t quite match the paint around it. A magnetic placard slapped over whatever was there before. Layer on layer of identities, peeled off and replaced.
That’s sticker rash. And once you know what it is, you can’t unsee it.
What it actually is
Sticker rash is the layered ghosting of old decals and swapped DOT numbers on a truck’s doors. It’s the physical tell that a carrier has cycled through multiple identities to stay one step ahead of enforcement.
Here’s how it happens. A carrier racks up serious safety violations, out-of-service orders, or a compliance record bad enough to shut them down. Instead of fixing the problems, they close up, register a brand new USDOT number, and put new door decals over the old ones. Same truck. Same driver. Same dispatch. New paper.
The industry calls this a chameleon carrier. Sticker rash is what it looks like up close.
Why it matters
Every time a dangerous operator rebrands, the crash history, the violations, and the unpaid penalties get left behind with the old number. The enforcement file resets to zero. A truck that should be off the road gets a clean slate and keeps running.
That’s not a paperwork problem. It’s a safety problem. It means unvetted, unsafe operators sharing the highway with your family, hiding behind a fresh set of stickers.
And it’s a market problem. Honest carriers who fix their issues, pay their penalties, and carry their history can’t compete with operators who simply erase theirs.
How to spot it
You don’t need to be an inspector. Look for:
Ghosted outlines where an old decal was removed. Mismatched paint or cleaner patches around the DOT number. Magnetic signs instead of permanent lettering. A DOT number that looks newer than the truck. Fresh decals on an otherwise worn door.
One of these might mean nothing. Several together is sticker rash.

Help us put sticker rash on the map
You see these trucks every day. Next time you spot sticker rash out on the road, take a photo and post it in our group, #Sticker Rash, with (hashtag) #StickerRash.

It’s where drivers, owner operators, and safety advocates are calling out chameleon carriers hiding behind a fresh set of decals. The more of us watching, the harder it gets for bad actors to disappear and reopen under a new number.
At Meiborg, we believe every carrier should be held to the same standard. No exceptions, no clean slates for bad actors, no hiding behind a fresh coat of decals.
Join us. Let’s make sticker rash a term every driver, shipper, and officer knows on sight.
